But what about those times where you feel stuck in a rut? Workplace productivity can dwindle down to nothing and even the smallest task seems unachievable.

This leaves you feeling frustrated, which just leads to even less motivation. It’s important to recognize that these ebbs and flows of productivity will always happen. The secret is finding some ways to create that motivation when it’s not existing naturally.

We can describe motivation in many ways. It’s not a tangible thing that you can see and hold. It’s a frame of mind and an energy that keeps us moving forward. Therefore, it’s hard to define it. Some say that motivation is what happens when you tire of staying the same.

The pain of not doing something becomes much greater than doing it, and this makes you jump into action. Motivation can appear from the smallest thing like having to do laundry (having to wash clothes is less painful than having nothing to wear) to big things: If you don’t finish this project, you will lose your job.

When it comes to working motivation, there will be many things you don’t feel like doing. The difference here – compared to little chores at home – is that every choice at work has a bigger price. Small choices can lead to you creating yourself more work, and right up to paying a big price – no longer having a job.

Every choice has a consequence but with motivation, it’s easier to deal with the hassle of the action than the pain that comes from avoiding it.

With that in mind, here are some ways to boost motivation at work when you may not be feeling it.

This may seem like an annoying and simple suggestion to boost your motivation at work – but it’s critical. Any task or requirement needs to be started at some point, and the sooner you start, the sooner you can get productive.

This is the time where you have to remind yourself of the negatives that will come from not getting started on a chore or task. Remind yourself that the sooner you start, the sooner you will be finished. Just starting will set the wheels in motion to allow productivity to happen.

2. Start Small

Have you ever noticed when you start to clean up a small mess, you end up cleaning the whole house? When a task at work seems too overwhelming, break it down into smaller parts. Starting with one of these smaller parts will have a trickle-down effect that will motivate you to continue.

Use that momentum to complete more tasks related to the project and you will find yourself motivated to finish.



3. Get Up and Get Moving

Motion creates emotion and emotion helps lead to motivation. This isn’t likely to happen if you’re sitting down and not feeling energetic. Sometimes, you just need to get up and moving to allow yourself to become productive. This has some science behind it, too.

The American Psychological Association looked at the issue between people who stayed sitting compared to getting up and moving. The active group showed a creative response of at least 81% of the time. This will allow you to generate motivation that leads to better creative thinking.

When you become active, you are more likely to bust through plateaus and create new ideas. So take some time to move around for even 5 minutes. Walk up and down some stairs, take a walk outside, or even do some jumping jacks in a quiet place

4. Have A Morning Ritual

It’s amazing what daily consistency can do for motivation. When you start the day with a morning ritual, it influences productivity for the rest of the day. A morning ritual helps to get your mind into a productive mode that determines your success for the day. Morning rituals need not be complicated – they just need to be consistent.

This ritual could involve walking up and going for a brisk walk, stretching, 15 minutes of reading, and then some meditation. It doesn’t really matter what you do; It’s just important to follow the same routine at the same time each day. The spillover effect will help with work motivation and increased productivity.

5. Lower Your Stress

This is easier said than done, but nothing zaps motivation like being stressed. When you are stressed, you release a lot of negative hormones such as cortisol into your body. A little of this is ok as we require them for survival, but too much is detrimental.



When you have elevated stress hormones, it can lead to a lot of chronic issues. Among those are feelings of irritability, anxiety, and depression. Feeling this way will make it extremely difficult to feel motivated and productive.

You will not eliminate all stress – but you can manage it. Exercise will be a great way to burn off those stress hormones and boost your creativity and motivation while you’re at it. Sleep will be paramount in decreasing stress and allowing you to function your best.

Aim for 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep each night. If you fill your body with garbage, you will feel like garbage, so eat as clean as possible. Eliminate refined carbs and sugars and choose fresh whole foods. Meditation and deep breathing exercises will also go a long way to lowering stress levels.

We can even do things like this at work where you can take a few minutes and focus on deep breathing to calm your body down.
