Spice lovers the world over are familiar with turmeric, a staple in tasty curries. What they may not realize is that they can use turmeric for pain relief.

What is turmeric and how does it bring pain relief?

Turmeric is a flowering plant and a rhizome, also known by the scientific name, Curcuma Longa. It is orange, and about 45 species of it exist in India.

People use the roots to concoct all manner of spicy dishes and sometimes desserts. Chefs bind it into a yellow powder for consumption. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine have long used turmeric to combat pain.

Rhizomes like Turmeric and its cousin, Ginger, have phytochemical like Gingerols and Shogoal which limit nausea and headaches. They also prevent peptic ulcers.

There’s more good news. These rhizomes may remove the effects of conventional medicine as well. While NSAIDs have a reputation for causing stomach ulcers, the natural compounds in turmeric prevent them, therefore providing relief from pain.

People use turmeric to relieve aching joints for many reasons. The inherent properties of conventional medicine like turmeric make them ideal weapons against pain. One of these, first of all, is the ability to manage inflammation.

Studies in the journal Oncogene discussed the anti-inflammatory properties of compounds and found that Curcumin is one of the most efficient in the world. Animal trials also showed that it reverses Alzheimer’s Disease in mice.

1. Outperforms other pain relievers

Curcumin’s reputation for being able to reduce pain led researchers to conduct tests on 45 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. One compared it to diclofenac sodium, an NSAID, which prevents heart disease.

The trial split the participants into three groups. The group which took Curcumin to relieve pain reported the best results. The compound didn’t have any adverse impact on them. A review of another sought studies confirmed these findings.

2. Beneficial for internal pain management

Curcumin manages the pain felt by the body’s internal organs as well. A trial on the NSAID mesalazine, a placebo, showed that Curcumin outperforms it for treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease. While the patients who took mesalazine are likely to suffer a relapse of the illnesses within six months, those who tried curcumin maintained control of the condition.

Pain is the body’s signal that it has too many toxins. You risk exposure to them every day. The result? A high likelihood of inflammation and cancer. Turmeric detoxifies the body efficiently and removes harmful carcinogens, amplified by its anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric-based remedies that work

So, turmeric relieves pain and makes the mouth water. That’s a combination that’s not easy to outdo. These home remedies will let you experience some of its magical effects.

1. Turmeric Milk

Turmeric milk soothes the inflammation that causes the aches in joints. It also limits the red bumps that come with folliculitis. Feel free to have a glass if you have a stomachache. Because it is a natural aspirin, you can use it to relieve swelling.

You will need:

  • A teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • A glass of milk

Warm a glass of milk and mix in the turmeric powder. Drink it twice daily to reduce pain and get a good night’s rest.

2. Turmeric, Ginger, and Honey

Harness the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric by combining it with ginger and honey. The mixture can give you multiple health benefits and relieve pain.

You will need:

  • One tablespoon of chopped turmeric
  • One tablespoon of chopped ginger
  • Half a teaspoon of honey

Boil two cups of water. Once the water comes to a boil, add the ginger and turmeric. Strain the mixture after five minutes. Let it cool before adding the honey. Drink daily to harness its benefits.

3. Turmeric & Coconut Oil

Arthritis causes immeasurable pain and limits daily activities. Patients often find standing, walking, and sitting difficult. Luckily, coconut oil supplies the antioxidants that the body needs. It is even more potent when combined with turmeric. Try this recipe.

You will need:

  • 1/2 a teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • One teaspoon extra virgin coconut oil

Mix the ingredients in a bowl and apply the concoction on the painful area.

4. Turmeric Tea

If mixing or blending is too much for you, why not drink tea? Turmeric tea is an ancient beverage. Traditionally, people combined it with black pepper.

You will need:

  • Four cups of water
  • Two tablespoons of fresh, grated turmeric
  • A teaspoon of fresh ground pepper
  • Lemon or honey to taste.

Combine the ingredients with water to make a delicious, savory tea.

4. Curried Soup

As you will know, it’s easy enough to make turmeric a part of your diet. The recipes and remedies available are countless. This Curried Soup not only teases the senses but eases arthritic pain.

You will need:

  • Two to three cloves of chopped garlic
  • A tablespoon of turmeric powder
  • Four to five peppercorns
  • An inch of sliced ginger
  • 11/2 cups of water
  • Seven to eight cloves of garlic

Boil some water, then add the turmeric powder and ginger. Grate the ginger and add it to the water as well. Throw in the other ingredients and bring the mixture to a boil.

5. Season vegetables

Another way to work this spice into your diet is to season vegetables. Use cauliflower, potatoes, or Brussel sprouts. Add the turmeric and other favorite spices. Toss them for about half an hour.

6. Mustard

Mix ordinary mustard with turmeric. Combine half a cup of ground mustard, two tablespoons of white vinegar, a teaspoon of water, a teaspoon of turmeric, and another teaspoon of salt. Then, stir. Site the mixture in the fridge.

7. Turmeric latte

Turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon combine to make a healthy beverage. Add some nut butter for extra creaminess. Black pepper gives it zing.

You will need:

  • Three to four teaspoons of turmeric powder
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • A 3cm piece of fresh ginger
  • A heaped teaspoon of honey
  • A full teaspoon of nuts
  • A cup and a half of milk
  • Half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • A good pinch of salt.

Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Warm the mixture up in a pot or a microwave. Then, this delicious beverage is ready to serve.

8. Turmeric Smoothie

This creamy recipe teases the senses and is an excellent anti-inflammatory remedy as well. It retains turmeric’s natural antioxidant properties.

You will need:

  • Half a teaspoon of turmeric paste
  • A quarter cup of chopped mango
  • A quarter cup of chopped banana
  • A cup of milk
  • A quarter teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Combine the ingredients in a blender. Add milk till you achieve your preferred consistency. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon and serve.
