Healing Powers of Honey

Honey is healthy, most people know that. We know that it’s an effective way to boost energy, strengthen immunity, and fight bacterial infections.

But the power of honey extends way beyond that. In fact, you’ll probably be surprised at this long list of ailments and health issues that honey can help prevent and treat. It’s about time that people learn about these.

Eye Problems

Despite what you might think, honey’s efficacy as a treatment for eye diseases is not a new discovery. It has been used by Indians and Egyptians during the ancient times to improve eyesight as well as treat eye infections, conjunctivitis, cataract and trachoma. It has also been found to provide relief for dry eye syndrome and prevent glaucoma in the early stage.

Diabetes

A good source of natural sugars fructose and glucose, and loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, honey is a good alternative to white sugar for diabetics. Including honey in their daily diet to replace white sugar can help in the treatment of this debilitating disease. Of course, close monitoring of blood sugar levels and moderate eating should not be overlooked.

Heart Disease

According to the 2009 International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, honey is good for the heart as it improves circulation of blood and prevents blockage in the arteries. It works by reducing LDL levels and increasing HDL levels (LDL is bad cholesterol while HDL is good cholesterol). It also inhibits the build-up of cholesterol on the walls of the blood vessels.

Cough, Sore Throat and Allergies

Honey has been among the top remedies for cough, sore throat and allergies. Its antibacterial properties make it an effective solution during the allergy season. It is also a natural cough suppressant. A study has found that kids who are given a teaspoon of honey before sleeping have fewer night-time cough episodes compared to those given with medications.

For kids ages one to five, use one-half teaspoon every two hours. For kids ages five to 12, use one teaspoon every two hours. For 12 year olds and above, use two tablespoons every four hours.  Don’t give this concoction to infants.

Cancer

According to a study conducted at the United Arab Emirates University, honey has a positive effect in cancer treatment. Researchers explain that honey has the ability to inhibit the growth and spread of various cancer cells such as those in skin cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer.

Not only that, it’s also an excellent way to boost the count of white blood cells during chemotherapy treatments. More research is needed to back up these claims but certainly, honey can be included in a cancer patient’s diet as a safer and healthier alternative to sugar.
