Be it a hot cup of coffee or chocolate ice cream, if either or both make your teeth recoil in pain, then you are among the unlucky ones who have sensitive teeth.
Research shows that teeth sensitivity is a widespread problem which generally occurs due to the damage of the enamel which acts a protective sheath for your teeth. This damage takes place because of exhaustive brushing and aggressive handling. Once the enamel is affected, the nerve endings get ruffled which automatically leads to teeth sensitivity.
American Dental Association (ADA) says that teeth sensitivity can also be due to genetics, gum disease, and decayed teeth and when the roots are exposed at the gum line, they tend to become vulnerable which is another cause.
If you suffer from sensitive teeth and it is uncomfortable for you to have your favorite ice cream or some other food, then you should consult your dentist. And if you want to handle this on your own, then the following tips should be taken into consideration to get rid of that dull pain forever.
1. One of the best ways to decrease tooth sensitivity is by using toothpaste which is specifically made to fight this painful disorder. These kinds of toothpastes consist of ingredients which communicate with the tooth’s nerve right away to desensitize it. You can use soft toothbrushes with ergonomic bristles that are less coarse than the traditional toothbrushes with this toothpaste.
2. If you grind your teeth at night then a mouth guard will come in handy because it keeps you from doing it. Use baking soda to harden the teeth and make it less sensitive. Pour a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in a quarter glass of water and either brush or rinse your mouth with that water.

Although it is recommended that you completely avoid acidic and sugary food, in reality, it is not convenient for you to do so because there will be occasions where you either have it by choice or by chance. Here, it is advised that after you have consumed this kind of food you should wait for an hour and then wash your mouth with fluoride rinse to control the sensitive teeth.
7. Take care of your gums and if by chance they start receding, know that it will automatically lead to the exposure of the lower part of your tooth’s structure with fluids and open air. You need to keep your gums in a good condition and for that, you should brush regularly, preferably twice and clean between your teeth thoroughly apart from using dental picks to remove all that plaque from your gum lines.
8. This might sound strange to you but chewing gum actually helps. Wondering how? Well, if you chew a sugarless variety of chewing gum, it will generate the production of saliva in your mouth which will harden your soft and delicate teeth. However, you must ensure that you do not get carried away and end up chewing too hard. To guard your teeth against trouble, you can take the help of sugar-coated chewing gum.
9. Before you go to bed, you can take some of the toothpaste in your index finger and put in a deep coat of it on your sensitive teeth. After that, it is advised that you leave your mouth open for a few minutes so that the toothpaste sets in comfortably. After it gets dried, close it up with a chewing gum devoid of any sugar. The gum needs to be chewed by you first and made moldable before you use it to seal the toothpaste. This way you will see that after a while your teeth feel less sensitive and most of that discomfort is gone.
10. Get sealants and use them to seal your teeth as they will protect your sensitive teeth from getting hurt. These act as a barrier to the teeth and are made up of plastic materials. They can be applied by your dentist. However, you need to keep in mind that if the nerve acts negatively then you might need to get some treatment like a root canal. You can also take the help of dental crowns to protect your already damaged tooth from further decay.
