Lucid dreaming is one of the most mysterious practices on the planet, and many people believe that it can help us unlock the secrets of our psychology. Put in simple terms, lucid dreaming is realizing that you are in a dream while you are in it without waking up.
It is said that if you are able to become conscious within your dream, you can control the outcomes and do absolutely anything. Lucid dreaming was recognized as far back as Aristotle, who said:
“often when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream.”
Lucid dreaming is similar to the ancient practice of Yoga Nidra, a sleep-like state which yogis report to experience during their meditations, where lucid dreaming is said to occur.
According to a study conducted by Stephen LaBerge, lucid dreamers are also known to make unique rapid eye movements. When a person is dreaming, the eyes shift rapidly, this is commonly called REM sleep. Scientific research has found that these eye movements may correspond to the direction the dreamer “looks” at in the dreamscape. This has enabled trained lucid dreamers to communicate with researchers while dreaming by using eye movement signals, Wikipedia reported.
As with many practices that encourage personal growth, lucid dreaming takes a great deal of patience, dedication, and preparation. As with meditation, many people quickly get frustrated and lose interest because it takes so much practice.
