Many people suffer from yellow nails. It’s a very common issue that affects normal people, and shouldn’t be ignored.

The color can be a sign of bigger and deeper health problems. Even if your nails aren’t completely yellow, but you have noticed a yellow tint to them, it could be a sign that something needs to be done and the white of the nail needs to be restored.

The great news is that because this problem is so common, there are a number of natural remedies and solutions for yellow toenails that can also help to resolve bigger health issues without using dangerous medicines or prescribed drugs.

What are the root causes?

Some yellow nails are caused by excessive use of nail polish. Polishes, particularly the darker ones, can stain your nails, which is why a base coat will help your nails to stay white for longer and seal and protect them from staining.

The second biggest cause is smoking. Nicotine and tar can turn your nails an ugly yellow color, as well as give you many other internal health problems, too. Try to give up or decrease your smoking intake to help reduce this health risk.

If neither of these apply to you, then the most likely cause of your yellow nails is a fungal infection. This is usually combined with excessive flaking and a bad small. If left untreated nails can thicken and crumble. This can also be a sign of something more serious, such as liver, lung and thyroid disease, or nutritional deficiencies. Be sure to see your doctor if you think it might be something more serious and does not resolve itself with the following natural remedies.

Solutions:

Soak your nails in lemon juice

A simple and cheap way to remove the yellow from your nails. Simply soak for 10 to 15 minutes a day.

Peroxide and baking soda

Mix 2 ½ tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide to create a paste. Then, swab the paste across your nails and leave for three minutes. Rinse off the paste thoroughly and repeat every six weeks or when needed.

Tea Tree Oil

If you have a fungal infection, Tea Tree Oil is one of the best home remedies. It’s a natural fungicide with antiseptic and antimicrobial abilities. Apply to your nails using an eye dropper, leave to set, and then rinse with lukewarm water twice daily.

If you have noticed your symptoms worsen, be sure to visit your doctor to pin down the causes of your discoloration and find a resolution for the problem.
