{"id":5043,"date":"2014-11-03T14:00:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifeadvancer.com\/?p=5043"},"modified":"2014-11-03T14:00:46","modified_gmt":"2014-11-03T11:00:46","slug":"blind-man-sees-again-after-33-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lifeadvancer.com\/blind-man-sees-again-after-33-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Blind Man Sees Again After 33 Years, Thanks to Bionic Eye Implant"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>There\u2019s a new invention that can restore sight even to those who have been blind for decades.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukehealth.org\/blog\/ncs-first-bionic-eye-recipient-sees-first-time-33-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Hester<\/a>\u00a0from North Carolina was one of the first patients to receive the new technology, which gave him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/49991-bionic-eye-implanted-man.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a chance to see again<\/a>, after 33 years of blindness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Larry Hester<\/strong>\u00a0lost his sight in his 30s when he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called\u00a0<em>retinitis pigmentosa<\/em>. It\u00a0involves degenerative retinal changes, which lead to the loss of peripheral vision and the so-called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nyctalopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">night blindness<\/a>. The disease is hereditary in 60% of cases. There are 1,5 million people worldwide who suffer from retinitis pigmentosa.<\/p>\n<p>Hester is the seventh patient to receive a\u00a0<strong>bionic eye implant\u00a0<em>Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Device<\/em><\/strong>, developed by\u00a0<em>Second Sight Medical Products<\/em>, together with North Carolina\u2019s Duke University Eye Center.<\/p>\n<p>The bionic vision technology is based on the transmission of signals to the nerves of the blind person\u2019s retina. A\u00a0<strong>tiny camera<\/strong>\u00a0embedded in a pair of glasses detects the light and transmits it to a\u00a0<strong>miniature computer<\/strong>, which converts it into electrical signals corresponding to the synthesized image. A\u00a0<strong>wireless implant<\/strong>\u00a0consisting of 60 electrodes stimulates the optic nerve directly and thus transmits the signals to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<strong>bionic vision is more limited<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; in fact, a person can only distinguish between the light and the dark. Yet, the developers promise to expand the capabilities of the new device in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It\u2019s a fairly limited device, but it\u2019s an amazing leap forward<\/em>,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0retinal expert Dr. Colin McCannel. \u201c<em>It\u2019s not the vision you or I am used to. But for someone who has been in complete darkness, it must be amazing to see again. I think it\u2019s absolutely phenomenal.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that the device is not yet able to produce complex visual patterns and allows Larry Hester only to\u00a0<strong>see flashes of light and distinguish some objects from others<\/strong>, it is a true miracle for him and his family. \u201c<em>It\u2019s so basic<\/em>,\u201d he says in the video. \u201c<em>The light is so basic and probably wouldn\u2019t have significance to anybody else. But to me, it\u2019s meaning I can see light.
