You\u2019re motivated. You know exactly what you need to do, you\u2019ve got it all planned out and all you need to do is stick with it. What could go wrong?<\/h2>\n

Day one<\/strong>, check. You manage to stick with your goals and you\u2019re feeling good. Day two<\/strong>, check. You did it but feel your motivation waning.<\/p>\n

Day three<\/strong>, miss. You wanted to do it, but realized it\u2019d be months before you made any real progress and felt discouraged. Day four quit<\/strong>. The idea of not seeing big results for months has made you give up.<\/p>\n

Can you relate to this scenario? Most of us can, but it doesn\u2019t have to be this way.<\/p>\n

The big picture is holding you back<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s right, contrary to what you see plastered all over the internet, the big picture can actually hurt you. (And it can hurt you in a big picture way too<\/em>).<\/p>\n

You were taught the wrong way<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s not that the big picture is inherently bad, but the way you\u2019ve been taught is all wrong. It\u2019s unfortunate because it\u2019s the same everywhere you look, \u201cimagine yourself as a success\u201d has become the 101 on big-picture advice.<\/p>\n

How to use the big picture the correct way<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s a smart way to approach your goals and use the big picture, but first, we should take a look at the major problems with it. See if you can relate to these four problems, then I\u2019ll show what you should about them afterward.<\/p>\n

1. It makes you fantasize<\/h3>\n

You might not realize it, but there\u2019s a chance that when you envision yourself as a success (i.e. imagine the big picture<\/em>), you get a little \u201chigh<\/em>\u201d off the feeling of it.<\/p>\n

Even though it\u2019s not real, you still get that feeling of achievement and it makes you fantasize. So if any of you out there are prone to fantasies and daydreaming, this just might be the reason for it.<\/p>\n

2. It makes you feel overwhelmed<\/h3>\n

Do you ever just think of something you\u2019d like out of life and then dismiss it as quickly as you thought it? Want to know why you did that? Because you thought it was too \u201cunrealistic<\/em>\u201d of a goal.<\/p>\n

For example, having a \u201chot body\u201d would require too many days in the gym; becoming a skilled guitarist would require too many hours of practice; becoming more healthy would require eating too many bland meals.<\/p>\n

The feeling of overwhelm is so effective that you don\u2019t even consider some ideas. Even if you do end up pursuing a goal, it\u2019s easy to quit when you don\u2019t see any results after the first few days (right as your motivation runs out<\/em>).<\/p>\n

This happens all the time and is a major issue with the big picture.<\/p>\n

3. It makes you focus on planning and no action<\/h3>\n

The big picture is all about the end goal and the process of getting there.<\/p>\n

The problem with any plan is that there\u2019s an infinite number of small steps that can be included in one. And for each step, you can include a contingency plan in case it doesn\u2019t work (and your contingency can include its own contingency as well)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

See the problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to get caught up with making sure you\u2019re \u201con the right path\u201d (i.e. following the big picture<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Every hour spent planning could be spent on actually creating a good outcome for yourself. It\u2019s not hard to come up with a few small tasks that you know for sure will lead to good things, that\u2019s what you should be focusing on instead.<\/p>\n

4. It makes you inflexible<\/h3>\n

When you make a big picture plan, you strive to stick to that plan. But in the initial phases, there\u2019s a critical window where it\u2019s still easy to quit.<\/p>\n

This period is vulnerable because it\u2019s right after your motivation has worn off but before you\u2019ve developed strong enough habits to overcome gaps in your consistency.<\/p>\n

If at any point you miss more than a few sessions of work, you\u2019ll fall off the boat completely. Why? Because you\u2019ll say \u201cI\u2019ll start again tomorrow,<\/em>\u201d but never actually do it.<\/p>\n

Eventually, you\u2019ll just stop thinking about it and pretend like you were never doing it, to begin with. It sucks, but it happens all the time.<\/p>\n

The correct way to approach your goals<\/h3>\n

Here are three smart tips for approaching the big picture and goal achievement in general.<\/p>\n

1. A glance at the big picture, never focus on it<\/h3>\n

Personal development guru Stephen of \u201cDeep Existence\u201d says to think of the big picture like a\u00a0jigsaw puzzle.<\/p>\n

We use the picture on the cover (i.e. the \u201cbig picture\u201d<\/em>) as a point of reference. You shouldn\u2019t stare at the cover while putting the pieces together, you\u2019d fumble around and make a mess of things.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s impossible to create something with grace if you don\u2019t give 100% focus to what you\u2019re doing, so imagine how good your results will be if you don\u2019t give that focus to each step your actually doing (essentially the building blocks of your goal<\/em>).<\/p>\n

So instead, just glance at the big picture occasionally (instead of constantly thinking about it<\/em>). Focus most of your attention on what you\u2019re actually doing, and then every once in a while making sure that it fits into the grand scheme of things.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let your lofty goals scare you away by thinking about them too much, it\u2019s not like it\u2019s going to disappear if you don\u2019t think about it.<\/p>\n

Just do the work, and eventually, you\u2019ll meet your goals.<\/p>\n

2. Focus most of your efforts on the smallest, most actionable steps<\/h3>\n

Following on that last tip, make sure to give complete focus to each and every step. Don\u2019t worry about what\u2019s happening in 10 steps or 5 steps, only what\u2019s happening right this moment (with \u201can idea\u201d of what the next step will be<\/em>).<\/p>\n

This line of thinking creates an ultra-flexible mindset. You\u2019re not going to be thrown for a loop because you missed out on assignment or changed your schedule last-minute.<\/p>\n

This way you never end up feeling like you\u2019ve \u201cstrayed too far from the path,\u201d<\/em> which leads to wanting to give up.<\/p>\n

3. Let your experiences guide you towards your goal<\/h3>\n

The great thing about taking action is that you learn everything you need from it. It serves as an internal compass that changes course each time you learn from your experiences.<\/p>\n

This is all you need to start with. Don\u2019t worry about what you want five years from now, one year from now, or even one month from now.<\/p>\n

Chances are you\u2019ll need to adjust the goal anyway, towards something more relevant to what your experiences show you.<\/p>\n

The bottom line<\/h3>\n

I don\u2019t think the big picture is a bad thing, but for most people, it isn\u2019t very helpful.<\/p>\n

People who\u2019ve just started to pursue a goal are most vulnerable to the flaws of a big picture focus, mostly since they haven\u2019t developed the discipline or knowledge needed to stick with a big lofty goal.<\/p>\n

Only people with good habits in place (i.e. people who won\u2019t abandon ship after missing a few days<\/em>) should create detailed plans, they\u2019re the most likely to stick with them after all.<\/p>\n

(But of course, this means they\u2019ve taken several small steps already, which is what you should be worried about \u2013 not the big picture<\/em>). So if you\u2019ve got a new goal in place, don\u2019t worry too much about it.<\/p>\n

Instead, focus on the small steps that\u2019ll get you there. You\u2019ll mess-up, yeah, but you\u2019ll learn from it, and you\u2019ll learn how to adjust the sails as well. And that\u2019s all you really need.<\/p>\n
