You might limit the number of social interactions you must\u00a0encounter\u00a0and\u00a0your friendships suffer or simply don\u2019t exist.<\/h3>\n

Perhaps you turn to drug or alcohol use to cope with feelings of anxiety and worry in social settings.<\/p>\n

When your feelings of distress and social anxiety get to the point where it is impacting how you are living your everyday life, you might be suffering from social anxiety disorder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The symptoms of social anxiety disorder can fall into three types: mental, physical, and behavioral<\/strong>. Negative feelings of judgment from others can feel overwhelming and spark feelings of rejection and disapproval.<\/p>\n

Often people with social anxiety look for signs<\/strong> to confirm their own negative feelings about themselves.<\/p>\n

Feelings of powerlessness\u00a0can be\u00a0overwhelming but there are things you can do to\u00a0ease\u00a0some of those negative thoughts and feelings<\/a> flooding your mind.<\/p>\n

You often\u00a0hear\u00a0people saying \u201cJust think of the positives<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s no big deal<\/strong>\u201d, although they might be trying to help, this isn\u2019t very useful.<\/p>\n

The key to overcoming social anxiety is not positive thinking but realistic thinking.<\/h3>\n

You might be\u00a0overexaggerating\u00a0the possible scenarios that might occur, instead think of what is likely to happen. If you are in the midst of physically losing control (rapid heartbeat, shaky,\u00a0sweatiness\u00a0or even\u00a0light-headed<\/em>),\u00a0try to\u00a0pay attention to your breathing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Belly breathing exercises let your body feel more relaxed and help with the\u00a0shallowing\u00a0of your breath when you are feeling anxious.<\/p>\n

Even if you try some of these techniques, you may still struggle, and that doesn\u2019t mean you have failed. Feeling anxious is more common than you think, you are only human after all.<\/p>\n
