Alcohol and coffee are two substances that many people consume regularly. They can both be addictive and extremely costly, not to mention the long-term impact on your health, and yet we all accept them as a part of our social norms.

Tobias, the co-founder of Semplice, decided to give up the two substances for 15 months to see the real effects they were having not only on his health but also on his relationships, bank balance and state of mind.

Tobias found that he learned a number of things, and many things about his life shifted and improved. So far, he has never looked back.

Here are just some of the things that happened when he quit alcohol and coffee for the 15 months:

Tobias lived in New York and when he was drinking he was spending around $1,000 on alcohol each month. Like any major city, drinking is a part of the culture and is an extremely expensive habit.

If you work it out, that’s 2-3 cocktails every other day and a couple of bottles of wine each month. Not only this, but by going out drinking regularly you inevitably spend more money on eating – drinking leads to extra food costs, and that can easily add up to $1,000.

Most social events involve drinking, so Tobias found that he would have to say no to people and therefore didn’t see them. Being the one sober person going out with a group of people who are drinking can be very testing. He found that without alcohol it was almost impossible to listen to the rambling gossip from his friends.

It also highlighted the idea that drinking culture is so engrained in our friendships, you almost can’t see friends without having a drink.

He saved $1,000 a month

Less gossiping

His sleep quality increased
