You might think that you are too busy to perform even modest maintenance on your home. No matter how hectic your life is, though, there are some things that you can do on the go.

Follow these three quick tricks for home maintenance to keep your house in good shape and lower your utility bills.

Caulk Quickly Without the Mess

Caulking cracks and seams is one of the most important things that you can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Without a good seal, outdoor air can pass freely into the house. That forces your HVAC system to work harder to maintain a stable temperature.

Caulk Quickly Without the Mess

Caulking is a pretty straightforward chore. In most cases, you just have to find cracks and fill them with the right kind of caulk.

Getting a straight line that isn’t messy, however, it can take more time than busy people are willing to spend.

You can make caulking a lot easier and cleaner by putting painter’s tape on both sides of the crack you want to fill. This will prevent the caulk from getting on drywall, wood, countertops, and other surfaces. Not only can you do the job faster this way, but it will look a lot nicer.

Give Your Water Heater Some Attention

Your home’s water heater uses a lot of energy, so it’s important to perform some maintenance on it at least once a year. If you don’t, it can become inefficient, which will make your utility bill bigger. Regular maintenance can also extend the life of a water heater, leading to lower costs over time.

Flushing the water tank is a fairly easy way to help your heater stay in top condition. Flushing the tank removes sediments and minerals that can block pipes.

While the tank is empty, you should check the anode rod and heating element to make sure they are in good condition. Once they start to break down, your unit will have a difficult time heating water.

Since checking the anode rod and heating element is a more difficult, time-consuming chore, you might want to have a professional do the job for you. That way, you know that the water heater has been given the attention it deserves.

Spend a Few Minutes Cleaning Each Day

Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean that you can’t find a few minutes each day to do a little cleaning around your home.

Try to devote five minutes a day to one room in your house. In five minutes, you can pick up clutter, sweep the floor, and do some light dusting. At the end of the week, each room will have been cleaned.

It’s easy to clean the house when you do a little at a time because you never let huge messes accumulate. The longer messes hang around, the harder they are to clean.

Some other tips for cleaning quickly include:

  • Putting plastic items in the dishwasher
  • Clearing dust from ceiling fans
  • Putting lemon rinds in your garbage disposal

Life is busy, but that doesn’t mean you have to let your house fall into disrepair. There are plenty of ways to keep it in good condition without sacrificing a whole day.
