When you get very ill, maybe with the flu or an infection, you may get to the point where you feel you have run out of options and have to head to your local doctor for an expected prescription of a week-long course of antibiotics. Well, these days you may find your doctor refuses to give them to you.

Medically, we are now at the point where we have been over-using antibiotics for several years. As a result, drug-resistant bacteria and superbugs are rapidly developing.

It’s becoming more and more difficult for scientists to work out how to fight them.

Antibiotics in pill form can only go so far and are sometimes losing the fight against illness and injection.

However, what most people forget, or most people don’t know about, are the natural holistic alternatives to antibiotics.

They are found in foods and herbs, those holistic healers still use around the world today, and we can still use these natural remedies, with the right knowledge:

Try these top five natural alternatives:

1. Oregano and the oil of oregano

A delicious seasoning for your Italian meal, oregano may taste nice, but it’s also extremely good for your health. It has substantial antibacterial properties and can help with digestion and weight loss.

The oil found in oregano, known as Carvacrol, has been proven to fight the bacteria that lead to infections. It’s especially good at treating digestive infections and even yeast infections. A team of researchers even found that Himalayan oregano oil has such strong antibacterial properties that it can even kill the hospital superbug MRSA.

2. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

With its antibiotic and antiseptic properties, the powers of raw apple cider vinegar are endless. It naturally alkalizes your system, can help with weight loss, lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk of cancer.

It can also be used to disinfect and sterilize. It’s a naturally occurring enzyme known as the Mother, contains protein molecules, beneficial bacteria, and nutrients.

3. Honey

Honey has been historically used throughout civilizations and has some of the best natural antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antimicrobials, and antiseptics to this day. It can be used as an alternative to antibiotics, according to The Independent.

Higher concentrated honey, like New Zealand’s Manuka honey, has the highest levels of antioxidants and curative powers.

There is also an enzyme found in honey that releases hydrogen peroxide, this helps your body to fight infection and prevents the growth of bacteria. Other benefits include strengthening your immunity, strengthening your white blood cells, and soothing your digestive system.

4. Garlic

Another classic Italian food, garlic is a great cooking tool and a very powerful natural remedy. It has been known to fight infections like the common cold and protect against yeast, parasites, bacteria, and more.

In 2012, Washington State University released a report stating garlic was 100 times more effective than two antibiotics at fighting Campylobacter bacterium (a common cause of intestinal illness).

5. Turmeric

The bright yellow spice works great in a curry, but also works at protecting your body from infection and has been used for over 4,000 years as a medicine. It works by both consuming it and applying it to your body, and if you mix this with honey and apply it to any infected areas of your body, you get an even more powerful effect.

While these natural remedies are scientifically proven to work, they have not been as thoroughly tested on humans, and before taking any other supplements (apart from in your food) you should consult your doctor.
