Have you thought of giving Colgate a run for its money? It may seem like a chore to make your own homemade toothpaste, but the health benefits of doing so make it worthwhile.

We explain why you should make homemade toothpaste and have a few recipes that use ingredients that you can get from your kitchen.

The Benefits of Making Your Own Toothpaste

Few people would disagree that a toothpaste made with natural ingredients is the best for the teeth. If it still feels tiresome to make some and you need convincing, the reasons we’ve listed may prompt you to start.

1. No Harmful Chemicals

First of all, regular toothpaste has Triclosan, which may disrupt the endocrine system and make the body resistant to antibiotics. Evidence suggests that it may affect the thyroid hormone.

Endocrine disruptors are a serious concern as they cause multiple health problems. Breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers can develop as a result of an endocrine system that doesn’t function well. Other issues include low birth weight in babies and precocious puberty in girls. Animal studies also showed reproductive effects.

Conventional toothpaste also contains glycerin, the chemical that leaves a pasty texture on your teeth after you brush them. There is speculation that it may prevent the teeth from remineralizing.

Another harmful chemical present in toothpaste is fluoride. This industrial waste product is toxic, even in small amounts. It triggers arthritis, hypersensitivity, and a range of gastrointestinal effects.

2. Effective Against Cavity-Causing Bacteria

Homemade toothpaste will have natural ingredients since you use whatever is available to you at home. Coconut oil, for example, can reduce Streptococcus, the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

3. No Foaming Agents

The toothpaste available on the shelves at pharmacies or supermarkets contain Surfactants that include Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS). They trigger the foaming action that takes place when you brush your teeth.

While SLS makes your mouth feel fresh, it also impedes the way your taste buds function because it shatters the tastebuds on the tongue, making food taste bitter. Coconut oil, conversely, works well as a toothpaste because it doesn’t do this.

Furthermore, SLS causes canker sores, so people who have recurring ones shouldn’t use store-bought toothpaste.

4. Inexpensive

You won’t need many natural ingredients to clean your teeth. What’s more, they last for months. Natural toothpaste is an inexpensive way to clean your teeth.

5. Easy To Make

It doesn’t take a lot of time to make toothpaste on your own. For example, peppermint oil leaves a fresh, minty feeling in your mouth. Of course, there are other essential oils you can use.

Recipes to Make Homemade Toothpaste with Natural Ingredients

Making your own toothpaste is a breeze if you have ingredients like bentonite clay and coconut oil on hand. Don’t worry about the toothpaste not having the minty freshness you are familiar with; peppermint, cinnamon, and clove essential oils take care of that.

Here are a few toothpaste recipes that center around coconut oil, bentonite clay, and three essential oils (peppermint, cinnamon, and clove).

1. Coconut oil and Baking Soda

Try using coconut oil, stevia, and baking soda for your homemade toothpaste. Coconut oil is antifungal, while baking soda removes stains because it is abrasive.

You will need:

  • Two tablespoons of softened coconut oil
  • Two tablespoons of baking soda
  • An eighth of a teaspoon of stevia
  • Ten drops of peppermint oil

Combine these ingredients and put the mixture in a container. Just dip your toothpaste into the mix when you are ready.

2. An All-Rounder

This homemade toothpaste is suitable for adults, kids, and even pets, owing to the natural ingredients within.

You will need:

  • A half-cup of unrefined coconut oil
  • Half a cup of baking soda
  • Two teaspoons of bentonite clay
  • Your favorite essential oil extracts

Mix the essential oils in a bowl. Note that the mix will be hard in winter and soft during the summer months. Then, add the essential oil flavor to taste. When using it, dip your toothbrush in the mixture before rinsing the brush with water.

3. Homemade Baking Soda, Essential Oil, and Calcium Toothpaste

This homemade calcium toothpaste includes miracle ingredients like baking soda and essential oils. As you already know, baking soda removes plaque and stains because of its rough texture. Essential oils have antibacterial properties.

You will need:

  • A quarter cup and an additional two tablespoons of baking powder
  • One and a half tablespoons of baking soda
  • Three tablespoons of coconut oil
  • A three-quarter teaspoon of peppermint oil
  • A quarter teaspoon of tea tree oil

Combine all ingredients except the calcium powder. Include it after you have blended everything properly. The result should be a paste. Store it in a jar for future use.

4. Bentonite Clay Paste

Make a natural toothpaste on your own with bentonite clay, sea salt, and peppermint essential oil.

Bentonite, coconut oil, and sea salt have antibacterial properties that promote digestion and remineralize teeth. Peppermint oil gives the toothpaste the minty freshness that you know and love.

You will need :

  • Four tablespoons of coconut oil
  • Four tablespoons of bentonite clay
  • Two tablespoons of filtered water
  • Half a teaspoon of sea salt
  • Half a teaspoon of real sea salt
  • 15 drops of peppermint essential oil

Combine the oil, salt, and clay in a bowl. Start forming them into a paste with the back of a tablespoon. Add the water until you achieve the correct consistency.

Put in the peppermint oil, mix the ingredients once more, and store the paste in a container. Put only a small amount on your toothbrush when using it.

5. Homemade Earthpaste

This toothpaste gets its name for obvious reasons. It contains all-natural ingredients that will help and not harm the teeth.

  • Two tablespoons of bentonite clay
  • A three-quarter tablespoon of distilled water
  • Five drops of stevia

Mix three tablespoons of water with the clay in a bowl. Add the stevia and essential oil one drop at a time. The flavors will combine over time. Add the salt to taste. Store the mixture in a container.
