In this summer period, many of us wonder how to get rid of mosquitoes. The point is, however, to use natural methods and avoid harsh chemicals.

Mosquitoes are genetically programmed to have a desire for mammal blood, both human and animal. This means that they need to feed on us in order to be able to continue their existence. But the bites themselves aren’t even the worst part about these insects, although they are very annoying.

What’s more, several common mosquito species transmit serious diseases, like the Zika virus, the West Nile virus and Malaria, which can even be deadly to humans if not treated.

So it is very important to know natural ways to get rid of mosquitoes and avoid getting bitten by these pesky insects. And even though most people think that you have to layer yourself with chemicals to efficiently do that, it is not true.

There are multiple great and very effective natural ways to not only repel mosquitoes but also diminish their population as a whole, so there are fewer mosquitoes around for you to deter.

How to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes

Since mosquitoes are naturally attracted to us, using the carbon dioxide in our breath and the smell of our sweat to mark us as their targets, the best way to avoid them is to make them not see us as potential meals. And there are various ways to do that.

Green mosquito repellents

Firstly, you can use different natural and organic mosquito repellents, to mask your natural human scent, so mosquitoes fly right past you. Nowadays, natural products made with essential oils are all the hype.

But not only that, but they have also become very powerful at what they are supposed to do, measuring up inefficiency to products that do contain DEET or other chemical mosquito-repelling ingredients.

Just make sure that you reapply these green mosquito repellents often since their efficiency usually wears off in a couple of hours.

If you are not a fan of store-bought products, you can also make a mosquito repellent yourself. There are a ton of different DIY mosquito repellent recipes on the internet that you can choose from.

And most of them use water and multiple essential oils like the oil of lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender to create a good-smelling and capable insect repellent spray.

Natural mosquito traps

Thirdly, if you know that you will be spending most of your time sitting in one place, you can also set up a natural mosquito trap from them, which will not only distract them from you but will also help you lessen the overall number of mosquitoes that hang out in your backyard.



Just fill a bowl with ice cubes, place it outdoors and let the nice meal. Whilst the ice is melting, it will emit a lot of CO2, attracting the mosquitoes to the bowl. Then, once there is a swarm of mosquitoes in the bowl, put a lid on the bowl, which will trap the mosquitoes inside.

Although this method can be very time consuming, it has proven to work very well. And when you are fighting mosquitoes, the method’s efficiency trumps the time it takes to actually make it work.

How to get rid of mosquitoes in your yard?

Providing that you want a bit more permanent solution to the mosquito problem in your yard or garden, just try and keep your outdoor space clean of any and every place the mosquitoes could use to hide or breed in.

Since mosquitoes breed in standing water, the first thing you should do is to get rid of or turn over all containers that might collect water, be it rainwater or the morning dew. We’re talking everything from old tires to empty flower pots and even rain gutters.

This way you will be denying the mosquitoes a chance to breed in your backyard, and they will eventually move to other spaces, that are more mosquito breeding-friendly.

Coffee

But if you want to have a pond or any other decorative source of stagnant water in your outside space, you can place old coffee grounds in it.

The reason coffee grounds work is that they kill the mosquito larvae that are in the standing water and mosquitoes also avoid lying their eggs in coffee-treated water. This means that coffee will efficiently stop mosquitoes from creating new ones in the water sources around your home.

The water might not be as blue or might smell like coffee, but it is a small trade-off for living a mosquito-free life.

Keep your yard clean

Additionally, you should also keep your yard tidy and groomed. So cut your grass regularly and don’t let it grow too long. Cover your garden compost with a sturdy lid. And overall eliminate all possible mosquito hiding places around your garden.

By doing this, you will be taking away all the spots for mosquitoes to hide during the summer heat. Therefore, they will also move on to a yard, which does provide these places.

Mosquito-repelling plants

Finally, another method for getting rid of mosquitoes around your home is to plant mosquito-repelling plants around your home or along the perimeter of your garden.

There are numerous plants that are unpleasant to mosquitoes, and by placing them around your backyard you will be able to significantly decrease the number of mosquitoes flying around.

Such plants include lavender and marigolds, which will not only protect you from mosquitoes but also look very nice, mint and basil, which are also great culinary spices, citronella, lemongrass, catnip, and many more plants.

Just make sure that you also don’t plant flowers or spices that attract mosquitoes in your garden, in which case the Mosquito-deterring plants won’t have any effect.

Honey against mosquito bites

And if you do get bit by a mosquito, honey as a natural remedy can help to ease the itching and reduce the swelling and redness. Honey, overall is very healthy and has many benefits, including it being anti-bacterial.

Mosquito control is not an easy feat to achieve, no matter if you are using chemical products or stick to more natural remedies. But there are various natural ways to get rid of those irritating mosquitoes by lessening the number of their population in your outdoor space and making sure that these irritating insects don’t bother while you are outside.

And by implanting these organic methods in your backyard or garden, you will have an easier time dealing with mosquitoes, and you and your loved ones will be able to have a more enjoyable time outdoors.
