Almond milk is low in calories, rich in vitamins and has numerous health benefits. Make your own today with this 5-minute almond milk recipe!

Almond milk is a tasty and incredibly healthy solution for those who are lactose intolerant, vegetarian, vegan or simply prefer not to consume cow’s milk.

It has been used as an alternative to milk for centuries due to its long shelf life and amazing qualities.

Benefits & Nutritional Value

The benefits of almond milk are phenomenal – it is very low in calories, rich in vitamins, and boasts an incredible dose of bone-building calcium.

Just think about it, one cup of plain almond milk has a Recommended Daily Value, which is equivalent to:

  • 10% of vitamin A
  • 25% of vitamin D
  • 50% for vitamin E

Vitamins A and E are well-known antioxidants, which enhance your immunity, protect the body’s cells and tissues from damage and help to prevent cancer. Vitamin A is also vital for healthy eyesight, improving the skin and supporting normal growth and development.

Vitamin D helps to build and maintain strong bones, teeth, hair, and nails and also enhances immunity.

Besides, compared to soy and rice milk, almond milk has the highest concentrations of minerals:

  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorous
  • Potassium
  • Selenium

Unlike dairy products, almond milk contains absolutely no cholesterol and no saturated fats, so it will not damage your cardiovascular system. It is high in healthy omega-3 fatty acids and helps you lower your levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and protects your heart.

Almond milk is rich in calcium, with one cup offering approximately 30 % of the Daily Value of this extremely important mineral. Those who cannot tolerate dairy products (or just do not use them) often come up short on this nutrient.

You can use almond milk in various recipes as part of your daily diet or with your morning coffee (or tea if you are in the United Kingdom and prefer tea with milk)!

Homemade almond milk recipe

Fresh almond milk is also very easy to make at home. We all know that packaged products are never the best option for your health, so here is a homemade almond milk recipe.

Almond milk made by finely grinding almonds and placing them in a blender with water, then filtering the mixture with a strainer to separate the ground almonds from the liquid.

No tools required apart from a blender and a strainer. It is not that difficult, is it?

Homemade almond milk has a very light flavor, so you can enrich it with different tasty additions. In this almond milk recipe, we use cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and honey, but you can always experiment with spices and even dried fruit.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups raw almonds
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sea salt
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Freshly ground nutmeg

So let’s start!

1. Place the almonds in a bowl and add enough water to cover them by approximately two inches. Soak the almonds at room temperature overnight – they will look visibly plumped after soaking.

2. Boil a kettle, drain the almonds and put them in a blender (or food processor). Add one cup of room-temperature water and process for a couple of minutes; the mix should have the consistency of a thick paste. Put the paste into a bowl and add two cups of boiling water. Let your mixture steep for about ten minutes.

3. Ladle the almond mixture into a medium strainer placed over a large bowl. Press the mix with the ladle or the back of a spoon to squeeze as much liquid as possible (you can keep the ground almonds for another use).

4. Add honey and vanilla, a pinch of sea salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk thoroughly.

5. Enjoy!
