It is said that you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with.

So what if you surround yourself with empowering people? People you hang out with do matter for your wellbeing and personal development.

It’s important to think about whom you are spending your time with, as they will directly influence who you are as a person and therefore what you can achieve.

There are different kinds of friends, those who inspire you and those that drain you. It’s important to critically assess who is good for you and who is not so you can kindly remove the parasites from your life and focus on the inspiring people.

These kinds of people will enable you to create miracles within your own life simply by being there and being supportive.

If you have good, empowering people in your life they will encourage you to look after yourself and to fulfill your goals in life. They may also motivate you to make and achieve goals, something small like losing weight or something bigger like changing jobs or going back to university.

So how do you surround yourself with empowering people?

Think about the people you spend the most time with and write down all their redeeming qualities.

Then ask yourself these questions:

  • Are these people positive?
  • Are they happy?
  • Do they make you feel like you can reach your goals?
  • Would they support you?
  • Do they make you feel attractive inside and out?
  • Do you feel happy when you have spent time with them?

If any of these questions had a yes answer then you are already surrounded by good, empowering people. These people can help you achieve your ultimate goals because of their positive and loving support. If you answer no, then it’s time to kindly remove these people from your life and be open to meeting new people.

What happens when you have an empowering friendship group?

By the time you reach adulthood, have finished university and worked in a few jobs, you will have had the experience of failed friendships. You hopefully will be able to spot the people that drain you and that don’t offer anything positive back.

You will probably also come to realise it’s all about quality, not quantity when it comes to friends.

When you do finally start meeting and growing close to people who empower you, it will seem so obvious how easy it was to get there, You will realise that your friends will nurture you, they will pick you up when you feel like the world is constantly knocking you down.

Not only will they pick you up they will motivate you to carry on, to do better, to push back and get to where you want to be. Whether that’s a job promotion, booking a solo holiday or kicking a boy to the kerb, they will support and encourage you to fulfill your potential.

When you have an empowering group of friends, you will appreciate and love their honesty. This will come in many forms, from what clothes to wear, to slightly more important things like the person you are dating. You and your friends won’t be afraid to tell each other the truth because it’s always in your best interests and not to harm.

You will notice that your friendship group does not judge, or at least it does but not maliciously. What you have learned to steer clear of is someone telling you one thing and they then go and tell another friend how terrible what it is you are doing.

Your empowering friends will let you make mistakes, and let you learn from them and move on.

No judgment needed.
