Most people understand that garlic is healthy. But when bulbs start to go beyond their prime as sprouted garlic, they’re seen as no good. We are mistaken.

Garlic has always been known to house natural antibiotic properties. Its antioxidants provide help for those who suffer from many diseases and ailments. While garlic may not be your choice in medication, if you’re used to taking pills, I would say it’s much safer and definitely a natural choice.

A brief history of the appreciation of garlic

Garlic is one of the oldest grown plants in the world, being around for over 5,000 years. It’s the earliest recording is in Ancient Eqypt where slaves were fed a clove of garlic each day for energy and stamina to finish building the pyramids. Some slaves were even purchased with garlic.

Ancient Greeks and Romans also believed in the power of garlic. In 400 B.C., Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, prescribed garlic for many ailments, including digestive disorders, and heart problems. Hippocrates also used it to treat wounds. The wonders of garlic traveled through the middle ages with Spain, Portugal, and France introducing garlic to the U.S.

Garlic has come a long way and done many miraculous things. And believe it or not, it didn’t start out as a culinary herb either. It was only used to treat medical issues. So, early on, we didn’t use half of what garlic was intended for. Yes, it’s one of the most versatile members of the onion family, and one of the tastiest.

The best part is, when it sprouts, you should use it even more because of it’s enhanced flavor and health properties too, remember? Don’t throw it away. Take advantage of its more powerful aspects. The best part: you can learn about these powerful aspects right now.

The hidden knowledge of sprouted garlic:

1. Heart health

Sprouted garlic is not for the garbage. In fact, it’s good for your heart. To be exact, the sprouted form of garlic wards off heart disease and heart attacks. The way this works is simple.

Garlic, which is slightly over-ripe and growing shoots, contains phytochemicals that prevent the buildup of plaque in your arteries. When there’s no plaque, there are no blockages. Now, that’s some good news about that garlic you’re about to throw out.

2. Anti-aging properties

Garlic that is allowed to sit and sprout for at least 5 days produces high antioxidant activity. This type of garlic becomes an elixir that not only reduces signs of outer aging but also slows the aging of internal organs. It actually finds and gets rid of free radicals within the body.

3. The immune system

Before you decide to get rid of the sprouted garlic in your windowsill, consider keeping it. This garlic has more benefits than its fresh counterpart, as I have already stated many times above.

Your immune system can attest to that if you’ve ever accidentally ingested sprouted garlic in one food or another. I bet you felt pretty good and healthy. Well, sprouted garlic, and yes the type that sits for at least 5 days, strengthens your ability to fight off colds and germs. Sprouts of garlic have a huge dose of antioxidants.

4. Cancer

In the same manner sprouted garlic fights heart problems with phytochemicals, it can also block the spread of malignant cells and halt the effects of chemicals that cause cancer. This type of garlic can also get rid of free radicals that feed cancer. So, think twice and hold onto those less than fresh bulbs.

5. Strokes

Unfortunately, strokes happen often, and they are often deadly because they’re difficult to detect at times. Well, there is some good news concerning a natural helper. That would be sprouted garlic.

A substance in garlic, called Anjoene, causes blood clots which, when loosened, travel from its origin – to the brain. Sprouted garlic’s antioxidants and phytochemicals block the formation of chemicals that form blood clots, thus preventing many strokes. Wow! Now, that’s quite a serious issue treated by such a simple little sprouted bulb.

Garlic just gets better over time

This member of the onion family provides many benefits and helpful remedies, just as it did in the past.

Just think, if garlic worked for Hippocrates with healing wounds, heart conditions, and other issues, it must have done wonders during the many wars and struggles from then until now… even warding off vampires ;). Who knows, maybe they even understood the many benefits of sprouted garlic as well.

Even after the invention of penicillin in 1928, garlic was still used to supplement the outstripped supply of this man-made drug. Haven’t you noticed, how we all seem to go back to our roots when modern medicines fail us or we run out of supplies? I think it’s just human nature reconnected with nature itself.

So, before you clean out your wilted vegetables and fruits, let the garlic stay, with its shiny green shoots. These little miracle makers may be the very thing you need when times get rough. Garlic is a wonderful antibiotic and source of antioxidants, so never assume you understand all that this power little bulb can do.

Oh, and don’t forget, it tastes amazing as well. Go ahead, enjoy!

I also believe in all the benefits of garlic. Good article. Thank you.
Do you recommend eating the garlic sprouts raw and do they taste the same as garlic? I use garlic all the time and it never lasted long enough in my home in order to sprout. I have seen it sprouting in the store sometimes but assumed they were old and did not purchase. No seeds to sprout?
