Naturopathy is becoming an increasingly popular form of alternative therapy. Many people are now turning to natural remedies for a wide range of ailments and conditions.

However, some people still have preconceived ideas on herbalism and naturopathy. Fear of the unknown has shaped public perception and this has been further perpetuated by the mainstream media.

Naturopathy is unscientific.

The main criticism against natural medicine is that it is unfounded. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There have been many medical studies on the healing effects of natural ingredients and supplements.Similar to modern medicine, naturopathy is based on scientific research. However, unlike western methods, naturotherapy adopts a more holistic approach to healing. Dr. William Shannon explains that natural treatments enhance the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

“Naturopathy treats the human body holistically,” says Shannon. “We believe that the body has an underlining blueprint that it uses to repair itself.”

Just like doctors, naturopaths are also required to undergo extensive training and studying before they are qualified to practice. The study tried and tested techniques, which have proven effects.

Patients must choose between naturopathic medicine and conventional medical care.

A common misconception is the naturopaths are against modern medicine and pharmaceuticals. In fact, Shannon says that naturopathy is often used in conjunction with more conventional treatments.

“Our remedies will often balance and boost the effects of Western medicine.

“However, we do understand that there is still a need and use for pharmaceuticals in certain cases.”

Natural remedies are integrative and complementary to conventional medicines. While modern techniques aim to heal symptoms, naturopathy targets the root cause. Using fresh, natural ingredients, you can improve the overall functioning of your organs to support pharmaceutical effects.

While they prefer to use natural therapies, Naturopaths are more than willing to refer and collaborate with Western practitioners if required.

Naturopathic medicine is less effective and more expensive.

Naturopathic physicians have successfully treated chronic conditions that haven’t responded to modern medicine or surgery. They provide alternative solutions for a wide range of illnesses, from the common cold to incurable diseases.

Just like western medicine the costs of natural treatments vary. Prices will fluctuate depending on your condition and the practitioner. However, when you consider that naturopathy targets causes rather than symptoms, you are actually paying a lot less than repeated visits to the doctors due to an ongoing weakness in your body.

Naturopathy is for hippies and tree-huggers.

Many people from many walks of life seek natural remedies for a wide range of ailments. Over the last few years naturopathy has gained popularity and is now a common alternative to modern medicine. Many Naturopaths and herbalists have also studied western methods in order to provide more holistic treatments for their patients.

The public perception that natural therapies are ineffective and sometimes dangerous is entirely fictitious and false. There is plenty of evidence and research that supports the positive effects of naturopathy on the human body.
