It is crazy to think that summer is almost gone! The aisles in stores are lined with ads about “back to school”, flyers are being sent out about bus schedules, and the kids are picking out their outfits. When did the last few weeks of August become so rushed? Heck no!

The dog days of summer are gone, but our weather is only getting better, here are some ways to make the best of what’s left of your summer.

1. Do Some Traveling

Hey, I have always been a fan of being a tourist in my own town. There are so many little shops we pass up for the bigger stores with fancier signs. Take some time to walk around your city and explore these small mom and pop shops.

Traveling far from home takes money, but it’s worth it if you can swing it. Set back a little on your next paycheck and skip going out to eat a few times. Then, when you want, you can go on a spur of the moment trip. Take a day off work that isn’t just for running errands.

2. Take Up a Hobby

For some of us, summer is our downtime. In this time, why not pick up a hobby or even a sport? Find something that makes you happy and that you can look forward to. Why not do both and go swimming!

Don’t know how to swim? You can practice and learn. Already know how to swim? Challenge yourself to learn a new stroke or to do a certain amount of laps per day.

3. Shop Fresh

Instead of going to the big chain grocery stores, find a local farmers market or even a roadside stand. You can get handmade goods, and of course, some of the best tasting fruits and vegetables you will be able to find.

Go and pick up some fresh veggies and make a garden salad. Eating healthy will help make you feel better, it’s like every bite is a little bit of sunshine ready to brighten your day.

4. Start Canning

Going off of the previous tip, stock up on fruits and veggies that are on sale, and make canned goods. While yeah, it can heat up your house, you can have all the delicious flavors of summer when winter finally takes us in its grip.

Let me tell you something, corn cut off the cob is one of the most uplifting things you can eat in the winter. (You can just freeze it too!).

5. Host a Bonfire

We know that some summer nights are hot and muggy, but with summer winding down, the nights can be a bit chilly. Perfect time for a bonfire! Gather your friends, use some of that fresh fruit we mentioned earlier, and have a bonfire. Cook hotdogs with sticks over the flames and turns on some music. Oh, and don’t forget the s’mores.

Summer is an incredible time of the year for meeting up with friends, meeting new people, and going to new places. So instead of just surfing the web to see these places or do these things, go out and actually do them!

We still a few good months left to enjoy the warm weather so don’t let these stunning days go to waste. Use up that PTO time, use some vacation days, and just enjoy what’s left of your summer. Unwind and let loose!
