We are probably all familiar with Actimel and Yakult, which are marketed towards keeping our gut healthy.
Whilst they are useful, they aren’t as effective as taking a tablet with a concentrated probiotic. If you don’t take one of these already you should, read below to see the signs that you should regularly be taking a probiotic.
Here are five reasons why you should be taking a probiotic.
1. Food Poisoning
If you have suffered from a bout of food poisoning recently, it’s vital to take a probiotic to replenish the healthy bacteria in the gut. It also helps kick start your digestion following an episode of vomiting or diarrhea. It’s also a really good idea to keep taking probiotics as they help the body defend itself against any bacteria that try to invade.
Antibiotics are amazing when we need them to fight an infection…but they also fight all our good bacteria too. These drugs are made to kill all bacteria, and unfortunately, they aren’t smart enough to know which is the good stuff and which is bad. If you know you are going to need antibiotics for something, double up your probiotic dose after that time to restock your good bacteria.
3. Skin Complaints
Our skin is very clever. It can tell us if there is a problem internally that we can’t see. If you suffer from acne, rashes or eczema it could be that you are lacking the right amount of good bacteria. It’s worth trying a course of probiotics to see if this clears up your skin complaints, as well as having some hormone tests.
4. Mood Swings
There have been some recent studies in the effect that having a healthy gut has on asthma symptoms and severity of attacks. Probiotics are also excellent if you happen to suffer from food allergies. Whilst they are not a cure, they have been known to help reduce food allergies in those who take probiotics regularly.
Probiotics are also the one thing you need to take with you if you plan on going traveling. Start taking them a few weeks before you go and continue taking them whilst you are away and they can help reduce the likelihood of contracting “travelers belly”.
