Most people who want to enjoy a healthy lifestyle usually start by taking a step to find nutritious food options as per nutritional recommendations.

However, most of us do not achieve optimal results in the sense that we fail at the point of consuming them!

In fact, the way you consume your food actually determines the number of valuable nutrients you consume.

We take a look at some healthy foods that most of us tend to consume in ways that are not healthy and advisable.

1. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a great source of proteins not to mention that it is one of the best snacks you can take just before working out. Ideally, peanut butter should be made by simply crushing peanuts but many people tend to fancy additives in peanut butter.

Things like fat, sugar, and oils should be avoided when making peanut butter. If you are fond of picking industrial-made peanut butter, then it is high time you acquired a food processor and start making your own.

2. Beans

Beans are common and not by a fluke! They are cheap and highly nutritious-think of beans as the cheapest and readily available source of protein. The problem comes in consuming beans from canned sources – they have been found to have a chemical known as BPA.

This chemical has been found to be a predisposing factor to heart diseases, cancer among other deadly diseases and conditions. Canned beans are also high in sodium levels meaning that you should stay away from them. The best way to take beans is to wash and cook your own rather than opt for canned beans.

3. Apples

Whoever came up with the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”must have known the nutritional value of apples. Apples are a great source of vitamin C, folate, vitamin A, potassium, iron with most of them concentrated in apple peel.

Most people will usually want to peel them without knowing how much they are losing! So, it’s time you started crunching apples right from the peels but make sure you go for organic ones.

4. Broccoli

People have traditionally liked cooking broccoli with many avoiding chewing them raw but did you know that cooking them is actually not the best method?

Cooking broccoli results in a massive loss of nutrients and if you can’t stomach eating them raw, then steam them for a few minutes just to save the best for last!

5. Sweet Potatoes

One tuber that should frequent your plate is the sweet potato owing to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant features. Unfortunately, if you enjoy eating fried sweet potatoes, you are doing yourself more harm than good.

Frying them adds lots of calories that are harmful to your health. You should instead boil them as long as you don’t mash them with butter and sugar. You can also go for baked sweet potatoes instead of fried ones.
