Since the cost of living is growing and money is becoming harder to save, we are all in need of some free (and cheap) things to do to keep us entertained whilst tightening the purse strings and avoiding spending money.

Even simple activities like a night at the movies or a meal out with the family are becoming too costly for many and saving money is becoming more and more important to all of us.

Of course, some places in the world are more costly than others but no matter where you live, there are plenty of things you can do without spending money.

From walks with breathtaking views to activities that will give you some much-needed exercise, here are some amazing things you can do to entertain yourself without spending money.

1. Research your own town

Many people aren’t even aware of the beautiful scenery that can be found in their own town.

Explore the hidden places just around the corner by taking a long walk on a road you’ve never taken, or do a quick internet search for the highest point within 100 miles and take a trip there, sit on a bench and take in the views.

2. Read a book

Find a list of the must-read books of the century and make your way through them. Or start with a classic like Animal Farm. Go to your local library and grab whatever catches your eye – start reading it right away under a cozy blanket and be transported to another world without spending money.

3. Visit a museum

Almost every town and city has at least one museum – research what is near you and plan to spend a day there.

4. Go to a park

One of my favorite things to do is sitting on a swing in an empty park and contemplating life. Find a little stream or pond and dip your toes in. Sit on a bench and watch children play.

Whatever it is that you decide to do, spending time in a park can be calming and help you clear your head.

5. Sort your house

Every so often, your house needs a good clear out. What better way to spend your day than reorganizing your kitchen or clearing out your wardrobe?

6. Write

Putting your thoughts down on paper, whether it’s a poem, a biographical story or a fiction piece is one of the best ways to clear your head and spend your time.

You never know, you might stumble upon the next bestselling idea.

7. Ride your bike

Taking a bike ride around your town can be a fun way to explore new places, get some exercise and breathe in the fresh air.

8. Volunteer

There are so many opportunities to make a difference in the world if you have the time to spare. It will give you a sense of purpose and belonging to help others and most of all, it doesn’t cost a penny.

9. Exercise

Get some exercise and release those endorphins – it will make you feel a world of difference. Do something outdoors for an added boost.

10. See friends

Call up that old friend you haven’t seen in a while and arrange to go for a long walk or invite them over for a coffee and a chat on the couch.

Getting to know people again that you may have been too busy to see lately will make you feel really good.

11. Call your parents and grandparents

They miss you.

12. Update your resume

Even if you’re not looking for a new job, you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Plus, it’s a confidence booster to remind yourself of everything you’ve achieved.

13. Play tennis

Or soccer, or basketball – any sport that will get your blood pumping and some fresh air in your lungs.

14. Learn a new language

Free apps like Duolingo can help you learn a new language. Find forums online and practice with native speakers – it will be a rewarding experience.

15. Take a free online course

Find something that interests you and research the free online courses that are available. Most often, all you need to sign up is an email account and internet access.

16. Clean out your emails

There’s no better feeling than deleting old emails, unsubscribing from junk newsletters and sorting important emails into folders. Spend a few hours organizing and you will feel so much better for it.

17. Find a new hobby

Learn to play an instrument, practice chess or go fishing – find a new hobby that you can spend your time on. This one may involve making initial payments to invest in your hobby, then all you need to do is practice your new-found hobby.

18. Make time for romance

Whether it’s with your spouse or new love interest – make some time to bring some romance into your life.

19. DIY (do it yourself)

Research some DIY projects on Pinterest or find some DIY blogs and start practicing. Got an old wardrobe you want to get rid of? Use the wood to make a bookshelf!

20. An experiment in the kitchen

Those ingredients that got shoved to the back of the pantry? Dig them out and find a recipe you can practice to put them to use.

Switch out some traditional ingredients with your own take on the recipe and you may discover something amazing.

21. Go to a busy cafe and people watch

Even better if you can find one with outside seating. Grab yourself a drink and make it last whilst you watch everyone go about their daily lives.

22. Hold a bonfire

Whether it’s summer or the colder months, having a bonfire is a great opportunity to bring all of your friends together and have a good chat. Bonus points if you can get everybody to each to bring a dish, dip or drink.

23. Host a game night

Invite your friends round and dig out those old board games from the attic.

24. Get a second job

Is there something you’re interested in? Music? Film? Get a part-time job in those areas, but make sure it’s something you enjoy doing. You’ll have fun, whilst making money – much better than just spending money!

25. Go to a high school sporting event

Whilst this is more attainable in some countries rather than others, there are often many events that have a great atmosphere, are free to attend, and are entertaining to watch.

There are so many things you can do close by that doesn’t cost a penny – be creative and think about what makes you happiest, then find ways to do it without spending money.
