There is hope. In a world where manipulation, deception, lies, and censorship abound to serve the purposes of those with power, sometimes truth prevails.
In 2012, research by Gilles-Eric Séralini, et al was published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT).The conclusions clearly showed that the genetically-modified (GM) corn NK603—both with and without the use of the pesticide Roundup—causes liver and kidney malfunction, cancer and death in rats.
In 2013, the study was removed from the journal due to pressure by Monsanto, the owner of the plant and Roundup. Monsanto’s position was that the results of the Séralini study were inconclusive as was its own (90-day) research.
The researchers opposed the retraction and began to garner support from the scientific community with their defense of the study. A formal paper was published in 2013 to address the concerns of those questioning it:
“Our recent work…remains to date the most detailed study involving the life-long consumption of an agricultural genetically modified organism (GMO). This is true especially for NK603 maize for which only a 90-day test for commercial release was previously conducted using the same rat strain…
It is also the first long term detailed research on mammals exposed to a highly diluted pesticide in its total formulation with adjuvants. This may explain why 75% of our first criticisms arising within a week, among publishing authors, come from plant biologists, some developing patents on GMOs, even if it was a toxicological paper on mammals, and from Monsanto Company who owns both the NK603 GM maize and Roundup herbicide (R).
Our study has limits like any one, and here we carefully answer to all criticisms from agencies, consultants and scientists, that were sent to the Editor or to ourselves. At this level, a full debate is biased if the toxicity tests on mammals of NK603 and R obtained by Monsanto Company remain confidential and thus unavailable in an electronic format for the whole scientific community to conduct independent scrutiny of the raw data…In our article, the conclusions of long-term NK603 and Roundup toxicities…were in turn linked to the deaths by anatomopathologists. GM NK603 and R cannot be regarded as safe to date.”
One particular 2009 study by the same Séralini group tested three GM corn products (NK603, MON810, MON863) and found:
“Our analysis clearly reveals for the 3 GMOs new side effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, although different between the 3 GMOs. Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system. We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn.”
After the most recent research was yanked from FCT, the study underwent two additional peer reviews, both of which reinforced the validity and results. Many scientists from all over the world have strongly supported the whole family of research, the controversial study in particular, and vociferously opposed its retraction from FCT. Consequently, the study has again been published, this time in Environmental Sciences Europe.
Does anyone need further proof that GM plants (and animals) are not safe for human consumption? Of course. Many people stand firm in their beliefs that government wouldn’t approve the use of anything if it weren’t absolutely sure it is safe. Like DES. Some people think that corporations wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize profits and so wouldn’t put anything really dangerous on the market. Like cigarettes.
Question: So what’s the big deal if I use Roundup to kill some weeds around my house?
Answer: When you spray the liquid, not every drop goes directly onto the weed; some lands on adjacent ground and some particles become airborne. Pets sometimes eat grass. Toddlers sometimes put things in their mouths that have been on the ground. People sometimes breathe. Anything that comes into contact with what is above ground gets washed into the earth every time it rains (which then soaks into groundwater that people eventually ingest). There are innumerable natural solutions based on thousands of years of human agriculture. It just takes a little more effort.
